The Love of a Horse

Image
When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.  James 3:3  Part of my day to day life on the farm includes horses.  As a kid growing up I desired to have a horse, but my dad just wouldn't budge.  He felt that they never earned their keep and they weren't worth the time.  Fast forward to now and I have the ability to help others with the horses, but what people don't realize is how those horses have helped me too.   As the Founder/Executive Director for Big Maple Farm's Natural Therapies, Inc., I get to interact with horses and individuals weekly.  It is truly something I feel God had called me to back in college and I am finally starting to see how he is blessing my life with the work that I do.  As I sit here at the end of another Sunday, I always look back on my week and reflect on the things I didn't get completed.  I find that there is so much I never got to and it makes me feel l...

Life is Never What It Seems

We live by Faith, not by sight.  2 Corinthians 5:7 This past year with Covid so many things have changed, but one thing has not and that is that we enjoy sitting down at the beginning of the year to write out our goals for the year.  The Boys' goals are usually pretty generic but they have meaning to them.  Well Logan's big goal for 2021 was to be able to reach the peddles and drive the scoop tractor all on his own.  It was a big deal for him and we were certainly pushing for him to eat salads, try meat, and grow big and strong.   Well I received a text message picture of Logan driving all by himself and I was so proud of him. He was so excited to meet his goal, but life is never what you expect.  One second your happy for Logan because he drove the tractor and the next, he is running in the house asking daddy to come help grandpa because the axle broke!  Yep! Within a matter of five minutes...ok maybe ten, the axle broke on the tractor in ...

Raising the Next Generation

Train up a child the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.  Proverbs 22:6 When we first decided that it was time to have children, I always hoped that God would bless me with a son.  I never had a brother and so I wanted to experience a boy and the joys of tractors, bugs, dirt, etc from a boy's eyes.  Little did I know that God would bless us with three amazing sons! I think God knew what he was doing because these boys LOVE farming and they take it seriously! They are involved in everything we do and they help make decisions as needed.  You might wonder why we include them in some decisions, because this is their life too.  This farm is their future and the choices we make today could affect them in the future.   For instance: purchasing equipment.  That piece of equipment can last several years and we don't want to invest in something that they won't be able to use for their future plans.  Or maybe they don't lik...

Maple Syrup for Days!

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.  Proverbs 16:3 Do you ever wonder if something you start will pan out?  I feel like that is an everyday occurrence here on the farm.  We have all these ideas that we try and some just never work out and others blossom like crazy.   A few years ago, we were at the Farm Show and Garrett was watching someone talk about Maple Syrup and tapping the trees.  He thought that it was really interesting and for an 8 year old we were impressed with his desire to watch and learn.  So he asked if we could try it.  Well we thought what the heck we can try and make a little for us and see what happens.  Well each year since we have just been growing and growing in the maple syrup area of the farm.  We have found a new thing that our land and God provides for us and so we want to provide something fresh for the community.   Last year was the first year we really started selli...
