Farm Kids

A family farm is where the entire family works together, plays together, and makes a life together.

The other day, Logan and I were in a store and people were commenting on how they feel bad for the farmers.  They feel bad for the rising costs, the hard work, and really the struggle to make ends meet,  Logan of course commented how he farms everyday and left it at that, but the conversation really got me thinking about the farm kids of the future.

How do these kids see their future?  Am I as their mother showing them that there is much to love about the farming world?  These kids are the future of farming. I relate them to military families.  You know only 2% of the population goes into the military and another 2% farm.  Will my kids follow in the footsteps of my grandfather, their grandfather, and myself?

Those people were right, farming is hard, in fact it’s nothing short of easy, and I think with the rising costs we are finding it harder to stay alive in the farming family industry.  These small family farms are dying faster each year.  So I am not lying when I say I feel a piece of me not wanting this for my children’s future.  I wonder will they be able to make it?  Are we going in the right direction to keep farming alive in the family?  There are always so many questions about the future of our children in any industry and in the world today.  However, then I look at what my kids accomplish in a day, how they act in public, and who they are as a whole and I know deep down that we as a family are instilling the right values, the love for farming, and a passion for their future.

These farm kids are 11,8, and 6 months and watching them work hard ALL day long to playing hard in the evenings is incredible.  They have a love for what they do and they get up in the morning and don’t complain about the chores, they enjoy the jobs that they are given for the most part, and they complete them to the best of their ability.  They manage their own schedule, so if you come to the farm at noon, you won’t find them around because the “lunch alarm” has rang and they are currently eating.  They are wonderful salesmen, so prepare if they wait on you because you will leave with more than you came for, and finally they are well spoken individuals.  Farm kids are the future of feeding the world and it is important to raise them to love what they do each and every day, and I am thankful God chose me to be their mom and help feed them that love.
